As I waited for the Carlson-Holohan award presentation to begin — an award passed down every two years — I thought to myself, “I feel like I am in the midst of the ex-presidents.” Dignitaries from the hydronics industry assembled in the Caleffi booth at this year’s AHR Show in New York, and I was honored to be a witness. These guys are that big — for the contributions they have given to our industry.
Past winners Dan Holohan, Mark Eatherton, Dave Yates, Robert Bean and current holder John Barba, were all on-hand to see the award move graciously to the next deserved recipient.
Awarded every other year to an individual who exemplifies excellence in the hydronics industry, and contributes to the education of steam and hot water heating, recruitment of youth to the trades and fund raising for building construction, this year’s recipient, I felt, was long overdue. The next torch-bearer? John Siegenthaler.

Siegenthaler, P.E., is a mechanical engineer graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a licensed professional engineer, and Professor Emeritus of Engineering Technology ad Mohawk valley Community College. “Siggy” has more than 32 years of experience in designing modern hydronic heating systems.
John is principal of Appropriate Designs, a consulting engineering firm in Holland Patent, NY. The 3rd edition of his textbook – Modern Hydronic Heating was released in January 2011. John currently writes about hydronic heating and solar thermal system design for numerous trade publications.
Congrats to John on a recognition well deserved. I know he will represent with humility, dignity and grace — because that is what John embodies.
