ROCKVILLE, MD. - Shapiro & Duncan announces today that its Director of Engineering, Andrew Huck, will be a featured panelist at the upcoming American Institute of Architects (AIA) National Convention, to be held May 17-19, 2012 in Washington, DC.
Entwined with the Convention's overall theme, "Design Connects," Huck will be a panelist for a 90-minute session on Saturday, May 19th from 8:30-10am titled "Working at the Intersection of Process, People and Technology: IPD and BIM Connect during Design of Historic DC Projects."The session will focus on the importance of integrated project delivery (IPD) processes and utilizing building information modeling (BIM) to provide the best opportunities for the effective integration of specific team members' expertise and contribution to the project.
Utilizing two DC historic renovation projects and first-hand experiences from team members as examples, the discussion will also focus on showing attendees how to identify and mitigate unknown variables in construction projects to prevent costly changes, and how to develop and utilize a BIM execution plan to assist the entire project team with streamlining the design and construction process from conception to completion.
Shapiro & Duncan's Andrew Huck will be joined on the panel by the following industry luminaries:
. D. Graham Davidson, of Hartman-Cox Architects, LLP. With over 35 years of experience, Mr. Davidson has been involved in some of Washington, DC's most recognizable historic renovation, adaptive reuse and rehabilitation projects. BIM is a tool that fosters active collaboration throughout the design and construction process, and both are necessary to drive better value into the project. Huck will impart his experience and expert insights to attendees in these areas to help them to maximize their projects going forward in the spirit of connection and collaboration.
"The true benefits of the Integrated Delivery Process are only achieved through timely and honest communication, which allows the team to drive innovation and leverage knowledge," Shapiro & Duncan's Director of Engineering, Andrew Huck stated. "Each of the individuals involved in the design and construction process adds a unique set of elements; the more that each can be involved in the full process - design through construction - the better the result."
Huck brings 17 years of experience in the design, construction and evaluation of mechanical and plumbing building systems. His work experience is comprised of a wide array of building types including commercial, educational, institutional and federal sector work. Specialty projects have included state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and a variety of radio and television broadcast facilities.
