The International Code Council announced today that Shawn Martin has been selected to lead ICC's Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas program.

The International Code Council announced today that Shawn Martin has been selected to lead ICC's Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas program. The PMG team led the development of the new International Swimming Pool and Spa Code and is active in standards development.

Martin was named Director of PMG Activities. He has served as ICC’s PMG Director of Industry Relations for nearly four years.
“We are committed to the continued success of our PMG program,” said Code Council CEO Dominic Sims, CBO. “The ICC PMG program’s primary role is to support the I-Codes which are the predominant codes used throughout the U.S. and several countries around the globe. The PMG program will continue to focus on adoption and use of our PMG codes to improve public health and safety, technical services and grassroots development. We are pleased to recognize Shawn’s industry knowledge, skills and experience.”

Martin brings years of experience in the PMG disciplines, including building products. He serves as the staff liaison to the ICC PMG Membership Council. He is an active participant on technical committees of multiple plumbing code development organizations and involved in standards development with ASME (the American Society of Mechanical Engineers), CSA International (Canadian Standards Association), UL and SRCC (Solar Rating and Certification Corporation).

“I am looking forward to carrying on the work of ICC's PMG Group with a renewed emphasis on code adoption and support for ICC Members and stakeholders,” Martin said. “ICC is known for delivering the highest quality codes and standards for plumbing, mechanical, fuel gas, and now swimming pools and spas. I am proud to lead that commitment to public safety.”

Martin is a mechanical engineer with a master's degree in mechanical engineering from Vanderbilt University. He began his engineering career in product design and development, working to develop pneumatic power systems, inkjet printing systems, and eventually building products such as spa jets, and several other plumbing fixtures and fittings.

His professional experience includes Director of Applied Technology for the National Association of Home Builders Research Center, where he conducted research for the federal government and private companies on new and advanced housing technologies. Following that role, he served as the Technical Director for the Plumbing Manufacturers Institute, an association of plumbing product manufacturers. In that capacity, he served on the ICC International Plumbing Code Development Committee, Sustainable Building Technology Committee, ICC A117.1 Accessibility Standard Committee and the Industry Advisory Committee.

Martin and Director of Plumbing Programs Lee Clifton bring a wealth of experience to the ICC PMG program to support ICC Members and other code users. Clifton has decades of experience, and holds numerous certificates for training and medical gas inspection and is a journeyman plumber. He is an ICC-Certified Plumbing and Mechanical Inspector, and an active member of the American Society of Sanitary Engineers, the American Society of Plumbing Engineers and the American Backflow Prevention Association.

The International Code Council is a member-focused association. It is dedicated to developing model codes and standards used in the design, build and compliance process to construct safe, sustainable, affordable and resilient structures. Most U.S. communities and many global markets choose the International Codes.
