Raleigh, N.C. — FMI's third edition of “Strategic Planning for Contractors: The Guide to Superior Management Performance” now is available to readers in the building and construction industry.

The book, written by Hank Harris, president and managing director of FMI, offers advice and tips on applying strategy and strategic thinking to the management of a construction organization. Covering a variety of business management topics, the 209-page book also offers examples of strategic planning models, real case summaries and a sample situational analysis checklist. In summary, the book reveals the common elements of success in the construction industry and helps steer contractors to achieve those levels of success.

“Contractors know they do not need a strategic plan to build jobs, bid work and make money,” Harris said. “However, I wrote this book to help good contractors become excellent — acquiring high levels of achievement with better-than-average profits, while helping their firms become long-term, enduring players in the marketplace. Using strategy can take it to the next level.”

Topics featured in the book include: defining strategy; strategy and superior performance; linking your strategic plan and marketing program; the mission statement in construction; the external analysis; and making the plan live for the organization.

Harris speaks frequently at industry meetings nationwide. Providing consulting to key players in the construction industry, he works with firms in matters of organization, strategic planning and the execution of strategic plans through mergers and acquisitions.
