DALLAS, TX – Texas State University has awarded a contract to TD Industries for the implementation of a comprehensive program of energy monitoring and central plant optimization at its San Marcos and Round Rock Campus.
Under the contract, TD Industries has installed a web-based energy monitoring system for the central utility plants (generation of chilled water and steam) on each campus as well as submetering for each of the 50 major campus buildings. An energy dashboard will be installed in the lobbies of 31 campus buildings to display energy consumption and costs in real time.
The TD IndustriesOperations Center, staffed with experienced energy engineers, is responsible for analyzing the energy data from the Texas State University campuses in order to recommend the most efficient operating strategy at all load conditions. The data analysis will verify the energy consumption for the central plants and all the submetered buildings, enabling the equipment to be fully optimized on an ongoing basis."At Texas State we are committed to a more sustainable future," noted Sheri Lara, the university's Facilities Director. "Creating greater energy efficiencies helps us to achieve that goal, while significantly lowering our operating costs for years to come."
According to Ken Scheepers, Project Director for TD Industries, the utiliVisor technical platform is the key element toward enabling Texas State to achieve its energy efficiency goals. "With end to end energy monitoring and performance analysis of the Texas State system, we are able to track utilities from the point of generation at each plant through to consumption at each major campus facility," he explained. "This will enable the TDI/utiliVisor Operations Center to create energy savings at every critical point of the university's utilities system."
The energy systems at the San Marcos campus comprise three interconnected chiller plants -- a main central plant with a total capacity of 8,334 tons, the west chiller plant with a 2200 tons capacity and the east plant with a capacity of 2750 tons. The system also includes two gas fired steam boiler plants and 13,284 tons total chilled water generation. The Round Rock campus features a 1900 ton chiller plant along with a hot water plant. Submetering at both campuses will provide individual billing packages for 50 separate buildings, accounting for all energy consumption, including electricity, steam, chilled water BTUs, and hot water BTUs. TV screens in the lobbies at 31 of these buildings will have a dashboard displaying live energy consumption and costs on a real time basis.
