OSHA Urges Contractors to Join National Safety Stand-Down May 4–8
Key Highlights
- Falls remain the leading cause of construction fatalities, making prevention a top priority for every jobsite
- Contractors encouraged to pause work May 4–8 for hands-on safety training and hazard awareness
- Free OSHA resources and local events available to help crews improve fall protection practices
WASHINGTON, DC — The US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is calling on contractors and tradespeople to participate in the 13th annual National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction, taking place May 4–8, 2026.
The annual event focuses on fall prevention—the leading cause of fatalities in construction—and reinforces the importance of planning, training and hazard awareness on the jobsite.
Stand-Down Week Focuses on Real Jobsite Risks
OSHA is encouraging employers to pause work during the week and engage crews in practical safety activities, including:
- Fall prevention training
- Hazard recognition exercises
- Safety demonstrations
- Toolbox talks
Contractors are also urged to address job-specific risks, particularly those tied to roofing, ladder use and scaffolding.
Industry Collaboration Drives Safer Jobsites
Long-term improvements in jobsite safety depend on collaboration between contractors, workers and industry partners.
The Stand-Down is part of OSHA’s broader Fall Prevention Campaign and is conducted in partnership with The Center for Construction Research and Training, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and the NORA Construction Sector Council.
The initiative also aligns with Construction Safety Week, which promotes a unified approach to safety through its “All in Together” campaign focused on recognizing hazards, responding effectively and respecting safe work practices.
OSHA Expands Efforts With New Industry Alliance
As part of this year’s effort, OSHA will sign a new alliance with Construction Safety Week to strengthen industry-wide collaboration and advance total worker health across all phases of construction projects.
Assistant Secretary for Occupational Safety and Health David Keeling will participate in a Stand-Down event at the Henry Bacon Ball Field on the National Mall, while OSHA representatives will take part in events nationwide.
Free Resources and Events Available to Contractors
OSHA will publish a list of free public events to help contractors and crews find local opportunities to participate. The Stand-Down is open to organizations of all sizes and across all trades.
Since launching in 2012, the Fall Prevention Campaign has trained millions of workers and helped improve awareness and safety practices across the industry.
Contractors are encouraged to share their participation using #StandDown4Safety, provide feedback and access a certificate of participation after completing activities.
