MOKENA, IL — ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 5000-2022, Cross-Connection Control Professional Qualifications Standard, has been designated as an American National Standard by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and is now available for purchase.

ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 5000, the referenced standard in the Uniform, International, and National Standard Plumbing codes, provides requirements for testing of backflow prevention assemblies and establishes the minimum qualifications requirements for certified backflow prevention assembly testers, fire protection system cross-connection control testers, backflow prevention assembly repairers, cross-connection control surveyor/specialists, and backflow prevention program administrators. The Series 5000 is referenced by code bodies and authorities having jurisdiction throughout North American and on an international basis. The document also contains additional information in its appendices, including field test procedures, troubleshooting flowcharts and guides, assembly and test kit schematics, and sample field test report forms.

    Vital Protection

“With the growing use of recycled or gray water systems and chronic water shortages in some areas of the country and world, it is vital that our essential water resources be protected,” said Sean Cleary, ASSE Series 5000 working group chairman and vice president of the IAPMO Backflow Prevention Institute. “There is no overstating the importance of cross-connection control programs and ensuring that properly trained and certified personnel are in place to specify, install, test and repair this critical protection — the ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 5000, the industry’s gold standard, mandates the proper level of training, testing and experience needed for backflow personnel.”

Changes in the 2022 revision address new products and procedures developed or refined over the past several years, along with code and standard changes. ASSE 5000’s working group was made up of dedicated individuals from each stakeholder and industry group that make up the cross-connection industry. Its finished product helps ensure necessary protection is in place to protect the safety and quality of water systems in North America and beyond.

    True Consensus

The ASSE Series 5000 was first issued in 1990 and designated as an American National Standard by ANSI in 1991. The standard series has since been updated and revised in 1998, 2000, 2004, 2009, 2015, and 2022. To prepare, update and revise this edition, representatives from different regions and industry segments dedicated themselves to achieving true consensus, thereby advancing the backflow prevention community.
