Texas Adopts 2024 Uniform Mechanical Code for HVAC Contractors

The updated code takes effect Sept. 1, bringing new requirements for refrigerants, ventilation, indoor air quality, and mechanical system design to Texas contractors.

Key Highlights

  • The 2024 UMC enhances air filtration, ventilation, and refrigerant safety requirements for HVAC professionals in Texas

  • Adoption promotes industry consistency, supporting innovation and economic growth within the state's mechanical sector

  • The code update reflects current industry practices and emerging technologies, ensuring systems are safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly

AUSTIN, TX — IAPMO® is applauding the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) for adopting the 2024 Uniform Mechanical Code (UMC®) for applications regulated under the state's Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractors program. The updated code is scheduled to take effect Sept. 1.

The adoption gives Texas HVAC contractors, inspectors, engineers, manufacturers, and building owners access to the latest mechanical code requirements addressing public health, safety, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and system reliability. The UMC is developed through an American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-accredited consensus process involving regulators, contractors, engineers, manufacturers, and other industry stakeholders.

“Texas continues to demonstrate its commitment to protecting public health and safety through the adoption of modern, science-based codes,” said Christina Kaeini, IAPMO senior director of Government Relations. “The 2024 Uniform Mechanical Code incorporates critical updates that address evolving technologies, indoor air quality, ventilation performance, and refrigerant safety while providing clear, enforceable requirements for the mechanical industry.”

Updated Code Addresses Refrigerants and Indoor Air Quality

Among the most significant updates in the 2024 UMC are enhanced air filtration requirements, new ventilation system balancing provisions, updated refrigerant safety classifications, and requirements governing the use of emerging low-global-warming-potential refrigerants. The code also adds new provisions that support current mechanical system design and installation practices.

For HVAC contractors, the updates provide guidance on evolving equipment technologies while establishing enforceable requirements that align with current industry best practices.

Adoption Supports Consistency Across the Industry

Texas has a long history of adopting nationally recognized construction and safety codes that promote consistency for contractors and regulators while supporting innovation and economic growth. According to IAPMO, adopting the 2024 UMC helps ensure HVAC and refrigeration professionals across the state will be working under current standards that reflect today's mechanical industry.

IAPMO also recognized the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, the Texas Commission of Licensing and Regulation, industry stakeholders, and code officials who participated in the rulemaking process and contributed to advancing safe and sustainable mechanical systems throughout the state.
