ELKHART, IN — ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) has opened a new 65,000-square-foot testing laboratory in Elkhart, Indiana, expanding its ability to evaluate construction and manufacturing products across multiple testing disciplines.

The facility officially opened Aug. 12 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, facility tours and a reception attended by ICC and ICC-ES leadership. The new laboratory brings advanced testing capabilities under one roof.

Expanded Testing Capabilities Support Product Development

The laboratory includes a weathering laboratory, new materials laboratory, large-scale structural testing laboratory, benchtop fire laboratory and additional testing spaces designed to accommodate evolving requirements across the construction and manufacturing industries.

By consolidating multiple testing disciplines, ICC-ES expects the facility to streamline operations for building product, plumbing and automotive testing while creating opportunities for greater collaboration among its technical teams.

“This facility significantly expands what our teams can do,” said ICC-ES Executive Vice President David Tompos. “And while the laboratory is rooted here in Elkhart, its reach is global. The products we test and evaluate come from around the world, and the work done here helps support safer, more reliable buildings far beyond this community.”

New Facility Designed for Testing and Innovation

The grand opening included remarks from ICC Chief Executive Officer John Belcik, ICC Board President Mike Boso and Tompos. The event also featured guided tours of the new laboratory.

In his remarks, Belcik highlighted the facility’s role in supporting building product development and safety.

“This facility strengthens ICC-ES’ position as a leader in building safety and equips us to help drive the next generation of building product innovation,” he said.

The laboratory combines modern workspaces with upgraded safety features and employee amenities. Its design is intended to support both testing efficiency and employee well-being as ICC-ES expands its technical capabilities.

Elkhart Lab Adds Capacity for Growing Product Demand

The new facility is expected to create 15 to 20 jobs over the coming years, including positions for project managers, engineers and laboratory technicians.

The expanded testing capacity supports ICC’s broader mission of advancing building safety and performance while helping manufacturers evaluate products for use in safer, more resilient and sustainable communities.

With testing capabilities spanning structural performance, fire, materials and weathering, the Elkhart laboratory gives ICC-ES additional capacity to support manufacturers as construction products and testing requirements continue to evolve.
