Research into aquifers around the globe show them losing more water year-over-year than is being replenished.
According to a news item from Hilary Hanson of The Huffington Post, two new studies conducted by the University of California at Irvine have incorprorated data from NASA satellites. The results are grim. An examination of the 37 largest aquifers on the planet reveals:
Twenty-one of those aquifers have exceeded their sustainability "tipping points," meaning they lose more water every year than is being naturally replenished through processes like rainfall or snow melt, said Jay Famiglietti, senior water scientist at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and principal investigator in the two studies.
The most overstressed is judged to be the Arabian Aquifer System, which supplies water to almost 60 million people.
