HILLSBORO, ORE. – Caroma was chosen by EGA Architects and the Sisters of Providence to supply water-conserving toilets to Mary’s Meadow, a “small house” long-term care facility in Holyoke, Mass.
Caravelle 270 Easy Height toilets with raised buttons will be installed in 40 care units and eight public restrooms. The Caravelle range is a dual flush toilet, using 1.6 GPF for solid waste and 0.8 GPF for liquid and paper waste, averaging only 0.96 GPF based on a one-to-four full/half flush ratio. This saves nearly 40% more water compared to the nationally-mandated 1.6-gal. toilet. The expected annual water savings compared to a 1.6-gal. toilet is more than 46,000 gallons of water.
“The Sisters of Providence and EGA made a concerted effort to design a sustainable environment for Mary’s Meadows and its residents,” explained Pat Mixdorf, architect and project manager at EGA Architects. “We want to protect the environment where reasonable, such as using recycled materials and water-conserving fixtures. After reviewing several options for toilets, we chose Caroma. The toilets will save the care facility thousands of gallons of water each year, but in addition, Caroma has the most elder-friendly toilet in the market. The amount of effort needed to flush the Caravelle toilet with the raised buttons is minimal, and this is ideal for people with limited dexterity.”
In addition to the substantial water savings and ease of flushing, Caroma toilets feature a large trapway, nearly double the industry average, and a slimline design, making cleaning easy. The Easy Height bowl, taller than a normal toilet, is ideal for people with limited mobility.
The care facility, scheduled to open in summer 2009, will consist of four separate houses connected to a central chapel. The 10-person homes will offer residents a private room with adjoining private bath.
