New federal regulations mean pricier, more efficient water heaters

June 1, 2015
While new water heaters will provide savings over their lifetime, consumers will have to pay more in upfront costs.

Federal regulations that went into effect April 16 mean that while new water heaters will provide savings over their lifetime, consumers will have to pay  more in upfront costs.

According to an article published in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the cost of the new water heaters will be increased by modifications to the burner and heat exchanger, as well as added insulation. Depending on the model, the cost of installation could rise as well:

The cost to buy and install a typical water heater is about $900, though this can vary widely depending on water storage capacity and whether natural gas or electricity powers the heater. A comparable new model and installation will cost about $1,250, said John L. Sullivan of Sullivan Plumbing, Heating and Cooling, based in East McKeesport.
