MCAA Launches ‘Achieving MEP Spatial Coordination Through BIM – A Guide for Specialty Contractors’

Nov. 7, 2013
Early BIM adopters such as MCAA BIM Committee Chairman Steve Shirley and his fellow committee members amassed and combined best practices and proven, how-to information to develop the most comprehensive document if its kind. The guide will help contractors better navigate this complex issue and make more informed business decisions about spatial coordination and BIM. The guide will serve as an educational resource for contractors' employees who must act on those decisions, and for anyone interested in learning more about real-world approaches to the world of virtual construction.

ROCKVILLE, MD. — The Mechanical Contractors Association of America led a tripartite effort to develop the newly released “Achieving MEP Spatial Coordination Through BIM – A Guide for Specialty Contractors.” A task force comprised of MCAA, Sheet Metal & Air-Conditioning Contractors – National Association, and National Electrical Contractors Association members, with financial underwriting from the Mechanical Contracting Education & Research Foundation, developed the guide. The goal of the project was to help MEP contractors negotiate one of the most challenging issues in the modern construction industry: how to incorporate and leverage leading edge technologies and processes into their projects’ spatial coordination efforts.

Early BIM adopters such as MCAA BIM Committee Chairman Steve Shirley and his fellow committee members amassed and combined best practices and proven, how-to information to develop the most comprehensive document if its kind. The result is a guide that will help contractors better navigate this complex issue and make more informed business decisions about spatial coordination and BIM. It will also serve as an educational resource for their employees who must act on those decisions and for anyone interested in learning more about real-world approaches to the world of virtual construction.

Achieving MEP Spatial Coordination Through BIM – A Guide for Specialty Contractors is available now as a free download at www.mcaa.org/mepguide and www.mcerf.org. Hard copies of the Guide will soon be available to MCAA members for free as a benefit of MCAA membership.

Going forward, MCAA education offerings on the subject of BIM and spatial coordination will use the Guide to supplement and expand their content, including the three existing BIM courses being taught by Pete Mackenzie under MCAA's National Education Initiative (NEI).
