DALLAS - The American Fire Sprinkler Association (AFSA) has announced the recent expansion of its online educational offerings for the automatic fire sprinkler system layout technician. Adding to its popular Applied Sprinkler Technology Series is AFSA's newest seminar, Applied Sprinkler Technology 104: Layout Concepts, which is available online at Fire Sprinkler eCampus, www.SprinklerECampus.com.

The newest two-hour program, Applied Sprinkler Technology 104: Layout Concepts, is part of the first Fundamental block of the three-block online Applied Sprinkler Technology series, geared towards those wanting to learn fire sprinkler system layout, in accordance with the 2007 edition of NFPA 13, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems. The fourth installment in the Fundamental Block, this seminar covers topics including plans and specifications, sample plans, plan designations, specification numeration, obstructed and unobstructed construction, sprinkler plan working drawing requirements, preparing a background for a sprinkler working drawing. Registration is $95 for AFSA members ($125 for non-members), and 2.0 CPDs/0.2 CEUs will be awarded upon completion.

Lessons 1, 2 and 3 in the six-part Fundamental Block have already been made available online. The remaining lessons in the Fundamental Block (5 and 6) - which are nearing completion and will be available in coming months - include training on occupancies and hazard classifications, sprinkler spacing, location and position, piping and sprinkler layout, system configurations, material takeoff, sleeving, and drains. In addition, two elective courses related to the Applied Sprinkler Technology Fundamental Block - AFSA: Determination and Application of Seismic Protection Requirements for Fire Sprinkler Systems and AFSA: Advanced Seismic Protection of Fire Sprinkler Systems - are available for system layout technicians needing additional training in protecting fire sprinkler systems from seismic activity.

The second block in AFSA's comprehensive design training covers hydraulic calculations. Three of the four lessons in that block - Hydraulic Calculations, Parts 1, 2, and 3 - are already available on eCampus. The third and final block of the total program, which is still in development, will discuss more advanced subjects such as pumps, in-depth storage criteria, special systems (i.e. foam, flow control, water spray, special hazard, water mist, chemical, wet chemical), and alarm and detection.

This new eCampus approach to AFSA design training contains updated elements from the correspondence version of Applied Sprinkler Technology, reorganized and divided in such a way so that beginning or advanced layout technicians can effectively customize their education program based on their level of experience and knowledge.
