House Career & Technical Education Caucus partners with PHCC on Workforce Development Roundtable
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Congressional Career and Technical Education Caucus (CTE) will partner with the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors—National Association (PHCC) on April 27 to host a roundtable discussion for Members of Congress and staff on the innovative ways the plumbing, heating and cooling (p-h-c) industry is addressing the shortage of skilled workers.
CTE Caucus Co-Chairmen Reps. Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (R-Pa.) and Jim Langevin (D-R.I.), along with PHCC President Charles “Chip” E. Greene, have arranged for North American plumbing and HVAC contractors and manufacturers to share their real-life success stories in recruiting and retaining employees.
Across the U.S., there is a steadily increasing need for plumbers and HVAC technicians. In fact, by 2022, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the industry will need approximately 138,200 new workers. The Workforce Development Roundtable will be an opportunity to learn how the p-h-c industry is part of the solution to job creation.
“Whether individuals are interested in jobs in the field or office, there are many positions available right now that offer great pay, the potential for advancement and the satisfaction of knowing you are protecting public health and safety and the environment,” said Greene, who is the owner of Greene & Associates, Macon, Georgia. “ Plus, the lower cost of education related to lack of any required college debt, combined with the the ability to start earning a living wage during the training process, makes our profession even more appealing.”
The House CTE Caucus serves to raise awareness of and support for the CTE community and lead on legislation related to these issues.
“As our economy evolves and grows stronger, we must empower a 21st century workforce with 21st century skills,” said Congressman Jim Langevin, co-chair of the CTE Caucus. “Supporting strong job training programs is critical, as is connecting those education and training opportunities with employers. The CTE Caucus remains committed to closing the skills gap, and I am sure this Workforce Development Roundtable will yield additional productive ideas as to how we can do that successfully for the benefit of young people across America.”
“As co-chair of the House Career and Technical Education Caucus, I am focused to showing my colleagues examples of success stories from industries which are in-demand and provide family-sustaining jobs,” said Congressman Glenn Thompson. “This roundtable discussion is a great way to hear firsthand from those involved in plumbing, heating and cooling on their experiences in the industry.”
“We thank Congressman Langevin and Congressman Thompson for providing this opportunity to share information about career possibilities in the plumbing, heating, and cooling industry and the creative programs that our members are implementing to help with the skilled workforce shortage,” said Greene. “We hope this will generate future workforce programs that will further our industry’s contribution to the success of our nation.”
