SEATTLE WA — The world plumbing industry will discuss four pillars of sustainability in plumbing – energy, sanitation, environment and water – at the 2016 World Plumbing Council (WPC) conference being held in Cape Town, South Africa beginning today. Through a variety of keynote addresses and breakaway sessions, this international meeting that occurs every three years will focus on the synergies and relationship between these important global topics.

Fred C. Shilling, Jr., vice president of Plumbers Without Borders and a Master Plumber, is a guest speaker at this event. He will discuss the plumbing sector’s role in providing access to water and sanitation, highlighting the importance of safe, efficient design and implementation, which are both critical to building healthy communities in every corner of the world.

The Plumbers Without Borders’ display at the conference will include models of the innovative SaTo sanitary toilet pans that were invented by plumbing manufacturer American Standard, which operates under the LIXIL Water Technologies Americas division. The SaTo pans, with versions adaptable to various bathroom customs, close off pit latrines from the open air, helping prevent the spread of disease from air-borne insects that come into contact with human waste.

The dynamic efforts of Plumbers Without Borders volunteers, including Schilling and the organization’s President Domenico DeGregorio, have introduced the life-saving SaTo pans to thousands of homes in Haiti, and facilitated their use in developing nations worldwide.

DiGregorio, who is a co-founder of Plumbers Without Borders, will be moderating a session at WPC. The organization will be exhibiting in Booth #39 at the conference.
