Deadly Outbreak of Legionnaires' Disease Reported at WI Hospital

Three patients are reported to have died, with fourteen infected.

Cathryn Jakicic reports on the FacilitiesNet web site that three patients have died and fourteen have been infected with Legionnaires' Disease at the University of Wisconsin Health's University Hospital in Madison, WI. The suspected cause is the hospital's hot water system. From the article:

University Hospital had stopped use of hospital showers temporarily in response, and it used a hyperchlorination process to flush all hot water lines to eliminate Legionella bacteria. The four patients who tested positive for Legionnaires' disease are the first cases of the disease acquired at the hospital in 23 years.
