PPI Releases Updated PEX Plumbing Design and Installation Guide

New third-edition handbook reflects advancements in PEX plumbing systems, commercial applications, code updates and installation best practices.

Key Highlights

  • New third-edition guide reflects major updates in PEX materials, code acceptance and installation practices

  • Expanded commercial plumbing coverage highlights growing use of PEX beyond residential applications

  • New water service line chapter adds practical installation guidance for contractors and installers

IRVING, TX — The Plastics Pipe Institute, Inc. (PPI) has released the third edition of its PEX Plumbing Distribution Systems Design and Installation Guide, a comprehensive industry resource covering the design and installation of crosslinked polyethylene (PEX) hot- and cold-water plumbing systems.

Originally published 20 years ago, the updated 156-page handbook reflects major advancements in PEX materials, plumbing applications, code acceptance and installation methods. Developed jointly by PPI, the Plastic Pipe and Fittings Association (PPFA) and Home Innovation Research Labs (HIRL), with support and input from IAPMO and ICC, the guide is available as a free download through PPI’s Building and Construction Division website.

Updated Guidance Reflects Evolution of PEX Plumbing Systems

The third edition includes expanded information covering PEX tubing, manifolds and fittings, along with revised design recommendations and updated installation techniques. A new chapter focused on water service line applications has also been added, including specific installation instructions.

“Since the second edition of this guide was published more than ten years ago, many aspects of PEX plumbing systems have evolved”, said Lance MacNevin, P. Eng., Senior Director of Engineering for PPI's Building & Construction Division. “In addition to being the most common hot- and cold-water distribution material in residential plumbing, PEX tubing is now widely being used in commercial plumbing applications due to its flexibility, resilience, proven performance, and potential time savings during installation. With so much new information to share, as well as the knowledge learned from over thirty years of North American plumbing applications, PPI members felt it was time to do a total re-write of this guide, while also including many more pictures and graphics to make it easier to follow.”

According to PPI, the revised handbook adds new information to every chapter and is intended to help contractors, engineers, inspectors and plumbing professionals better understand modern PEX system applications.

PEX Adoption Continues to Expand Across Plumbing Applications

PPI noted that crosslinking technology for polyethylene was first pioneered in Europe during the late 1960s, with the first PEX radiant heating systems installed in 1972. Since then, PEX has developed a decades-long track record across residential, commercial and industrial plumbing applications worldwide.

In the United States, PEX was first adopted into the BOCA National Plumbing Code in 1993 before BOCA later became part of the International Code Council (ICC).

MacNevin added, “PPI is grateful to our members who provided pictures, graphics, technical content, and many hours of collaboration to finalize the third edition. We also recognize significant contributions from PPFA and HIRL in making this Guide a reality.“

Free Download Available With Printed Copies Planned

The PEX Plumbing Distribution Systems Design and Installation Guide is currently available as a free digital download through the PPI website. Printed copies are expected to become available for purchase during the second half of 2026.

Founded in 1950, PPI is a North American trade association representing the plastic pipe industry, including CPVC, HDPE, PEX, PE-RT and PP pressure pipe materials. The organization works with industry stakeholders to develop standards, technical publications and educational resources supporting plastic piping systems.
