ABC Report Highlights Technology Advancing Construction Health and Safety

The sixth annual construction technology report examines how contractors are using wearables, AI, drones, data and connected jobsite tools to reduce risk.

Key Highlights

  • Contractors are using wearable technology, AI-powered risk detection and environmental monitoring to address jobsite health and safety risks

  • The report includes case studies covering heat hydration, incident-data analysis, hand-tool safety, jobsite security, drone inspections and digital pre-task planning

  • Technology is being integrated with leadership, employee engagement and established safety programs to strengthen construction safety cultures

WASHINGTON, DC — Associated Builders and Contractors has released its sixth annual construction technology report on health and safety, highlighting how contractors are using technology, data and collaboration to address construction's health and safety challenges while improving workforce performance and operational excellence.

ABC released the report during Careers in Construction Month to recognize construction safety professionals' efforts to protect workers.

“The speed of health and safety innovation is redefining construction excellence,” said Matt Abeles, ABC Vice President of Construction Technology and Innovation. “ABC contractors expand their focus beyond traditional jobsite safety to create environments that protect the physical, mental and emotional well-being of every single worker. This report explores the technologies, strategies and best practices that help contractors reduce risk, improve workforce health and build stronger safety cultures."

Technology Expands the Scope of Construction Safety

The report examines health and safety technologies and strategies that extend beyond traditional approaches to jobsite safety. The technologies covered include wearable devices, AI-powered risk detection, environmental monitoring and connected jobsite solutions.

The report also addresses programs focused on mental health, fatigue and hydration management, reflecting a broader approach to worker well-being and risk reduction.

“While the construction industry continues to evolve, our commitment to protecting people remains unchanged,” said Adam Latourelle, Chair of ABC’s Construction Technology and Innovation Committee and Chief Information Officer, the BR Cos., Glendora, California. “As projects become more complex, innovative technologies are creating new opportunities to strengthen jobsite health and safety. The companies featured in this report demonstrate that technology is no longer simply a tool for improving productivity—it is becoming an essential part of modern health and safety programs. Technology alone does not create a safer workplace. Strong leadership, engaged employees and a culture that prioritizes health and safety remain the foundation of every successful organization.”

Case Studies Focus on Practical Jobsite Applications

ABC’s Tech and Innovation Report: Health and Safety features case studies authored by safety and risk management leaders at ABC member contractors.

The case studies examine approaches to keeping workers hydrated in the heat, using incident data to identify patterns and eliminate injuries, and establishing safety standards for hand tools.

Other examples include Relationship Dynamics Ambassadors that connect employees with coaching and resources, improved jobsite security monitoring, and the use of drones to conduct inspections faster and more safely.

Digital Tools Support Planning and Hazard Recognition

The report also highlights the digitization of pre-task planning and hazard recognition, showing how contractors are incorporating technology into safety processes before work begins.

These applications add to a broader group of tools designed to provide contractors with more information about jobsite conditions, worker health and potential risks. The report's case studies demonstrate how technology can be integrated with established safety programs rather than treated as a standalone solution.

Report Developed Through ABC Technology and Innovation Committee

The report was published by the ABC National Construction Technology and Innovation Committee and was made possible by ABC's 2026 Tech Alliance members—Arcoro, Autodesk Inc., BuildOps, Datagrid, Document Crunch, Egnyte, Kojo, KPA, Sage, Sentriforce, Smartapp, SmartBuild, SubHQ, Stack and Trimble—and ABC strategic partner Milwaukee Tool.

The report provides contractors with examples of how technology is being applied to health and safety challenges across construction, with an emphasis on practical strategies, data and collaboration.
