CLEVELAND, OH — Sonnhalter announced the passing of its founder, C. John Sonnhalter, whose vision helped change how manufacturers communicate with professional tradespeople across the construction, industrial and MRO markets.
Sonnhalter, who was 77, founded the agency in 1976 after recognizing that manufacturers needed more than traditional business-to-business marketing. They also needed to reach the contractors, technicians and skilled tradespeople who influence product specifications, recommendations and purchasing decisions on the jobsite.
Pioneer Helped Define Business-to-Trades Marketing
Over nearly four decades leading the agency, Sonnhalter established one of the industry's first marketing firms dedicated exclusively to manufacturers serving construction, industrial and MRO professionals.
He is widely recognized for helping develop the concept of business-to-trades (B2T) marketing, emphasizing that manufacturers must communicate directly with the professionals who install, recommend and specify products. That philosophy became the foundation of Sonnhalter's approach and has since become a recognized strategy throughout industrial marketing.
“My dad taught me that great marketing starts with listening,” said Matt Sonnhalter, President and Owner of Sonnhalter. “He respected the men and women who build, repair and maintain our world, and he built an agency that respected them too. His legacy lives on not only through our company, but through the countless clients, colleagues and friends whose lives he touched.”
Planned Leadership Transition Ensured Company Continuity
John Sonnhalter began transitioning leadership of the agency to his son in 2003 as part of a long-term succession plan. Matt Sonnhalter became president in 2008, and the ownership transition was completed in 2015, with John continuing to serve as a consultant, mentor and business development advisor.
Throughout his career, Sonnhalter remained active in helping manufacturers strengthen their channel marketing strategies while continuing to advocate for contractor-focused communications.
Mentor and Industry Advocate
Beyond the agency, Sonnhalter became a respected voice in industrial marketing through articles, consulting work and his leadership of the company's Tradespeople Insights blog, where he remained the primary contributor until retiring.
He also devoted significant time to mentoring entrepreneurs and nonprofit organizations as a certified SCORE mentor. In addition, he helped launch and served on the board of Good Knights of Lorain County LLC., reflecting his commitment to community service and leadership development.
“While the industry has lost a visionary, our family has lost a remarkable father, mentor, husband, brother, uncle, grandfather and friend,” Matt said. “He taught us that relationships matter, integrity matters and that success comes from genuinely understanding your customers. We are proud to carry forward the values and vision he established nearly 50 years ago.”
